The Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers against taking prescription-only Viagra and Cialis because they can cause “severe side effects, like a sudden, high or low blood pressure, chest pain, or even fainting.”
The warning comes after a two-year study found that Viagra was the most popular prescription medication among American men taking an ED drug.
The FDA also warned consumers not to take Cialis, a prescription-only drug that treats high blood pressure, or Viagra.
“Viagra is an effective treatment for ED, and Cialis is a much better choice,” the agency said in the letter that was sent to the FDA.
The FDA’s letter warned consumers that “all medications contain sildenafil, the same active ingredient as Viagra.”
The warning was sent to more than 1,300 men taking the popular ED drug, according to the FDA.
According to the, men who took the drug for one year, or more, had a “signal to the penis” and suffered “severe side effects, including a sudden high or low blood pressure, chest pain, or fainting.”
The FDA said in a statement that it has taken the drug off the market because of the serious risks.
The agency said it is working on a study that will be published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine in November.
The drug was developed by Eli Lilly and Company, the same company that sold the original Viagra.
